Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

RGRPSG409 - Assess greyhound structural and functional suitability for racing

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Prepare for greyhound examination

  1. Assess the potential risks to health and safety when working with greyhounds
  2. Obtain background information from owner and/or trainer on greyhound racing performance to assist with identifying common injuries
  3. Prepare a safe and controlled environment to conduct the examination
  4. Handle and control the greyhound to minimise the risk to self, others and the greyhound
  5. Recognise greyhound behaviour that indicates that an activity should be discontinued

Conduct physical examination for musculoskeletal dysfunction or injury

  1. Assess gait, and check mobility of major joints and limbs using flexing and extension techniques
  2. Examine the spinal column, applying gentle palpation techniques
  3. Examine lower limbs to detect abnormalities
  4. Assess common sites for torn muscles in racing greyhounds to detect injuries
  5. Recognise signs indicating whether injury or dysfunction is acute or chronic
  6. Monitor the greyhound for signs of pain, distress or alarm, and respond appropriately

Provide options for detected musculoskeletal dysfunction or injury

  1. Identify abnormalities and discuss examination findings with owner and/or trainer
  2. Refer greyhounds with major dysfunction and injuries to registered veterinarian for clinical examination
  3. Provide options for non-invasive treatment for minor dysfunction and injuries, with greyhound owner and/or trainer and in consultation with veterinarians
  4. Advise on strategies to avoid injury, and on recovery or stand down times for relevant injuries, in consultation with veterinarians, owners and trainers
